Recently, you may have noticed that skincare and acne prevention has grown far beyond the days of rinsing your face with soap and water before bed. Among the most luxurious of these new skincare products are face oils.

Oils have been used for centuries, dating back to the Egyptians and some Aboriginal tribes to moisturize the skin and treat sun damage. A wide variety of oils have been used throughout history, many of which are still big in skincare today including avocado, olive, almond, and rose. The beautiful Cleopatra, like many people in Ancient Greece, was known for her love of bathing in olive oil to provide a natural glow.

Today, we’re a little more purposeful with our use of face oils and use them discerningly to treat and maintain certain types of skin. While oils like almond and rosehip are available in their pure form, most face oil products (including ours) come as a combination of multiple oils. And they also sometimes come as vitamins so you can get the greatest benefit while using only one product!

Face oils are an awesome addition to any skincare routine but like any skincare product, they work best when applied properly! We’re here to be your face oil guides as you venture into this new world of soft, glowy skin!

What are face oils?

Face oil is pretty much exactly what it sounds like! Our face oils are a mix of oils, and vitamins, each with its own property, which is meant to hydrate and protect your skin. There are a variety of oils people apply to their faces, and we currently stock rosehip and sunflower oils.

When should I apply face oils?

Face oils provide many benefits for the skin and those benefits vary depending on the kind of oil and how you use it. Most skin care routines use face oils as the last step of the routine, applying a face oil after a serum allows both products to sink into the skin and do their work! Always apply face oils before any makeup or sunscreen so the oils are able to reach the skin and work their magic!

How should I apply face oils?

Oils can be used all over the face or as a spot treatment and because of their moisturizing effects, they may be more beneficial at nighttime to have adequate time to soak in and do their job. Like all skincare products, it’s best to spot test face oils before applying them regularly. This means, choose a portion of skin to apply to oil to and watch for any reactions your skin may have. If nothing happens, you’re all set to start applying regularly and liberally!

How often should I use face oils?

If you’re using a face oil as a moisturizer you can use it every day as part of your skincare routine. If you’re unsure of a certain oil’s effect on your skin, start by applying it a couple of times a week and wait to see how your skin responds.

Why use face oils?

Face oils have been around for a long time with the primary purpose of moisturization. Face oils can work to moisturize your skin alone or they can help seal in moisture from creams or lotions! Many face oils have additional ingredients for added benefits like olive oil and hemp extract to reduce inflammation and the popular ingredient squalene.

What kind of face oil is right for me?

Everyone’s skin is different, and it’s important to know what works best for you! The best way to do this is to patch test, a method mentioned above that allows you to see how a product works with your skin. The two face oils we offer at Hugs vary slightly in their purpose! The sunflower oil is a gentle, multi-purpose oil, suitable for all skin types. This is the perfect place to start if you’re new to face oils. Our other product, the rosehip oil is a slightly more complicated recipe made of multiple oils and vitamin E. Our rosehip oil is perfect to use after a day of sun exposure!

Face oils are a fun and beneficial addition to any skincare routine so play around with them and find out what works for you. Have fun on your new face oil journey and be sure to connect with us on social media and let us know what you think in the comments below!

This article was so helpful! I knew that face oils were “good for your skin”, but I didn’t know why or how to use them. Now I do-thanks!
